This website is dedicated to helping those living in Wales having problems
getting help and/or funding for GRS (Gender Reassignment Surgery) especially from the Health Commission
Wales (HCW) who believe there is no clinical need.
Welcome to the website for
GRS-Wales
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:
We now have a store for purchasing T-Shirts, mugs, bags etc. Please support us by visiting the GRS Wales Store and purchasing something.
Try out our new Search powered by Google, we will be adding improved search
results and search pages very shortly.
This is now the official site for GRS Wales, please bare with us as we update
the site to this new server as some links may have slight teething problems and
please add it to your browser favorites for future updates.
On this website you will find useful contacts to associations that may be
able to help those with Gender Dysphoria and having problems with funding for
Gender Reassignment Surgery, a petition to the
Health Commission Wales (HCW) to encourage them to change their views on funding with Gender Reassignment Surgery for those
with Gender Dysphoria and the GRS-Wales
forums, for adding news etc pertaining to
Gender Reassignment Surgery (GRS), Gender Dysphoria and the
Health Commission Wales.
At the left of the page you will find the "Site
Index" a selection of links, that will take you
to the other sections of the site that you may find helpful in the
problems you may be having or will have from the Health
Commission Wales (HCW) in funding for Gender Reassignment Surgery
(GRS).
Also if you have a site that you think is useful and related to this
site then please add
it to our directory.
This site was started for the very simple fact that those living in
Wales are
ostracized for something that we were born with by the Health Commission
Wales. Surely a small amount of funding can be found by the Health
Commission Wales somewhere to help those in need.
In
January 2005 the Health Commission Wales (HCW) issued their policy
statement on gender identity disorder, which included the eligibility
criteria patients have to meet to receive it. The guidance states that
if two separate letters of recommendation are received from consultant psychiatrists
and if the patient meets the criteria which include competence and
demonstrable knowledge of the cost and complications of the procedure,
sex reassignment surgery should take place.
But
this is complete rubbish as they will not allow funding for something
they deem "of no clinical need" even if you do meet the criteria. (see below)
UPDATE:
The HCW believe that funding is not appropriate for Gender
Reassignment as they see no clinical need and therefore it is not
necessary. This is an absolute disgrace for those living in Wales as the
HCW seems to think that the mental and physical trauma that one suffers
while going through the stages of Gender Dysphoria is not worth even
considering.
If
you would like to add any information then please either use the forums
or contact us
You
should appeal to the HCW but it is very rare that they will actually take
any notice as treatment for Gender Dysphoria is not a priority for
the HCW.
All
patients in Wales with Gender Dysphoria should write to their GPs, Local
AMs and Local
MPs demanding that something be done.
